• As a Volunteer Guide at our Portland Japanese Garden (one of the very best in North America), I've collected a number of Garden books. This book is my favorite. It is nicely illustrated with pictures, drawings, maps and diagrams. The narrative concerning Garden history, styles and design principles is clear, and concise. Many of the prominent Gardens in Japan are featured. It covers both classical and more modern styles of Gardens. If you get one book on Japanese Gardens, make it this one.

• I ordered this book somewhat "blind" without having seen it in a bookstore, etc. When it arrived, I must say that I was thrilled with the quality of the text, photos and other illustrations. The book thoroughly covers the basic history, principles and aesthetics of Japanese Gardens. Then it takes an in-depth look at some of the finest gardens of each type found in Japan. Highly recommended.

• Stephen Pollan believes that life's unpleasant discussions go better when you walk in with a plan. His experience coaching and advising his clients tells him these plans need to be both flexible and easy to remember. He has invented conversation outlines--"lifescripts"--to prep us for common confrontations and help us come out ahead.
  
  The book contains 101 lifescripts, each presented with similar supporting information and in a common format. "Each lifescript begins with a general discussion of the overall strategy you should use...highlighting what your goal should be." Pollan also suggests what attitude you should adopt, the preparation you need, how to choose a time for the discussion, appropriate body language to use, in addition to the lifescript itself. The lifescripts are presented in flowchart form, each containing icebreakers, pitches, possible responses from the other person, counters to their responses, and so on. There are also suggestions for adapting the lifescript to slightly different situations and "crib notes" to aid memory of the key points.
  
  The 101 lifescripts are drawn from areas of everyday life Job Hunting, Dealing with Superiors and Subordinates, Office Politics, Job Terminations, Dealing with Customers, Lenders, Investors, Vendors and Partners, Sales, Consumer, Credit and Lending Issues, and Communicating with family Members. Just in case we cannot find or adapt an existing lifescript to our particular needs, Pollan teaches us the five organizing principles of lifescripts 1) Take control of the situation; 2) Say what you want; 3) Show your power before you use it; 4) Absorb or deflect anger; and 5) Have the last word.
  
  The lifescript approach seems useful to anyone who wants to think through their strategy and options before beginning a difficult conversation. It seems particularly useful for those who prefer--or must--rely on conscious tactics in social interactions rather than intuition. It can help those who are not socially skilled become less fearful and more effective in the conversations that count.
• I bought this book based on what I could see in the contents with 's feature "Look Inside". The "Look Inside" features the first edition (1996), I believe and what I got in the mail was the 3rd edition (2004). MANY of the topics are not the same in these two so be careful! (Note The main picture of the porduct is correct, with the Yellow Bubble that says "Revised with new scripts for the workplace" but if you look at the "Look inside" you see a different version."
  
  LUCKILY, I was looking for a more business-based version, and it turns out that's what the 2004 version is, so I'm actually happy with the purchase, but I was sort of looking forward to some of the more personal life scripts, oh well.
• I regretted that I purchased this book. It seemed intriguing at first, but at a closer observation and actually reading through the scenarios, I was very disappointed. The ways that the author suggests to resolve some of the problems are immature and disrespectful. I couldn't believe my eyes.

• Was at a seminar that recommended this book. It is a good book, with good tips what to say when. I would recommend this book to all.
• Pollan and Levine have done an outstanding job assembling a wide variety of human relations challenges and dilemmas. My first action in assessing the book was to go directly to those scenarios in which I have had considerable training and experience. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the verbiage and the decision charts were spot on. One of the book's strengths is that each scenario is properly framed. The reader is fully educated on strategy and key concerns for handling the situation. The accompanying decision chart then becomes the road map for the situation. The ideal reader of this book is the new college graduate entering into his or her first professional position. There is simply a tremendous quantity of practical wisdom on human relations and office politics that I wish I had at that stage in my career. Additionally, the book is an excellent resource for the seasoned professional. It will reinforce and fine-tune many approaches already in use. Because it is relatively thorough, it will provide juicy tidbits and insights on some situations that perhaps the reader simply never identified. I highly recommend this excellent book for anyone concerned with ongoing professional and personal success.

"If you're a post middle-aged man with a fledgling intellect who gets giddy of every time the words 'Soviet' and 'corruption' appear in the same sentence, then this book may be for you. It reads like a rushed together 5th Grade book report. It's very redundant. Not a lot of information you couldn't find via a cursory Google search.

This is an example of the publisher trying to take advantage of all the current hype around Russia by putting out a sub-standard 'beach read' with a title that sounds exciting, attempting to appeal to grown men who've taken to reverting to adolescent male fantasies during the twilight of their own efficacy.

The author clearly has an ax to grind with the Soviets, which comes through in his writing. I personally wasn't looking for a commentary on the Soviet economic system by some pulp writer, but rather a detailed history of organized crime, which I did not receive.

I would pass on this book. If you really want to read about 'The Thieves' you might as well read the relevant chapters from Gulag Archipelago."

• This is a very fast read. My main complaint is that it reads like a 272 page Wikipedia article; you get information but there is no structure, narrative or original research. It starts with a history or crime in Russia and progresses forward explaining how the criminal gangs adapted to the structure of Russia/Soviet Union at the time. I came away with the impression that it is inevitable that Russia became a criminal state, but also feeling the thesis might be a bit too simplistic. It would have been interesting to at least interview some Russians and get their perspective or to provide some current events. Instead there are lots of generalizations repeated over and over as if to pad the book. So I'd say this was okay to get some background information but not the academic or insightful work I hoped for.
• Good read but nothing new if one is familiar with modern Russia. For those new to the autocratic, oligopoly that is Putin’s Russia then an excellent overview of how the state and organized crime are in essence two faces of the same coin.

• This is a magisterial book into the criminal aspects of Russian society. Crucial insights also into how criminality has seeped into the state. Makes one reflect about the similarities and differences between the state and a protection racket.
• Mark Galeotti's account on development of Russian organised crime stems from deep knowledge of both Russian history and culture. His breathtaking ride from past wild peasantry beginnings to today's white collar criminals is well versed in primary sources and numerous interviews with people on both sides of the law. Highly recommended read for students' of Russia and 21st Century crime.

• I am so happy that I made this purchase! First of all, it is absolutely beautiful. I love that there are pictures with each recipe so you know what you are making. The recipes are easy to follow and are made of items that you typically have on hand. It is not one of those cookbooks that you only make one or two of the recipes. As I thumbed through the book, I kept catching myself saying 'I need to make that". I have already made the refried beans and the olive spread. Thumbs up on both!! The beans were fantastic on top of plain white rice. Only advice I have for the olive spread is to make sure you have company when you make it, otherwise you may be tempted to eat the whole thing. I can see this book getting lots of use.
• I have been so excited for Joyce's Mom's Comfort Food Cookbook to come out! I worked with her husband Jim and he would bring in food made by Joyce from time to time. Her food was always so tasty. At Christmas time she was kind enough to put together a gift bag of her wonderful Christmas goodies. My favorite is her Graham Cracker Cookies and to my surprise it's in her book! Joyce's down to earth approach to sharing her recipes makes it easy to read and follow. The pictures are appetizing and encourages you to want to make the recipe right now! I love the family photo's. Another surprise she provided in her book was a section on how to can food and provided yummy recipes. I normally buy cookbooks and they end up on my bookshelf unused. • Sadly I had to read this on my way down to a spare of the moment time. I was an executor and I had to know more about what the job meant and this book did a good job on informing me. Though I wish you had put "Probate" closer to the start of this book as I was confused on the many times you spoke about it during the book. I ended up reading it in way later chapters.
  
  This covers many things I had to deal with and was(is) a great source of information. Something every one should read before any issues arise in ones life, as it will help you to prepare the job before some one passes away. The book gives you knowledge in a lot of areas that would help you prevent headaches after loss. Such as ways to avoid "Probate". I do wish I had read this before hand. But it worked just as well after hand as well.

• I'm a 60 year old Paralegal. I have been a Certified Paralegal since 1988. Often times I need to refresh what I learned in school. This book, among other legal books I purchased on , were great for re-learning or refreshing my memory. I learn a lot of new things. I often refer my clients to buy this book online at . It's a great step-by-step book for when a family member dies. The first chapters tells you what to do the first week after the decedent passed, then the next chapters cover what to do in the following weeks and months. It's great for someone grieving and needing some initial guidance on what to do. It covers setting up file folders for bills that start to come in and needing to be paid. It covers what an Executor is suppose to do and when. Must have this book on your shelf at home. This book is good for ANY State. Nolo Books are great in general.
  
  Please purchase any legal book pertaining to your STATE. I live in Texas, so these TEXAS legal books were helpful. The ones on Estate Planning and Texas Probate are great for a family to have on their home book shelves. You can refer to them when have your Will prepared, or if anyone in your family passes and asks you to be the Executor of the Estate. Everyone should know about PROBATE, it means "To Prove Up" the Estate (or Will) and it's Assets, and in a court of law. Whether you have a Will, a Trust or No Will or Trust, an Estate must be probated in some way. You can "google" Texas Probate or for any state that you live in, and read up on it. Everyone who passes away, their Estate must be probated. Even individuals who have a Revocable Family Trust, which is often created to "avoid" probate, often has to go through probate anyway because they did not keep their Trust current. An attorney can explain. Yes, you will like this book. Jennifer in Houston, Texas.
• Have only read excerpts from this book so far,but it has already helped me immensely. I felt lost and overwhelmed by the task of being Executor, but the book reduced it to human scale and laid a series of small, achievable tasks, Right off the bat, learned that the Estate was considered "small" and therefore qualified for a simplified probate process. That alone justified the purchase price!
• My father in law died recently with a rather small and relatively uncomplicated Will, so my husband, who was named as the Executor, decided to try and Probate the Will without the use of a lawyer. That meant I would be the one handling all the work. I was a little worried, so I bought this book and read it before I agreed to undertake the task. (A really nice feature was that I was able to buy an add-on copy of the book in form for only an additional $2.99 so I was able to start reading it immediately.) The book was fabulous and gave me all the tools, and, therefore, the confidence to act on my own. I learned so much about the process of Estate Probating that I believe anyone with a few organizational skills (and a great deal of time and patience) can Probate a simple Will without a lawyer. Of course, I must warn you that this Estate had no outstanding debts, no real estate and only some IRA's, some cash accounts and a checking account. Moreover, I am not sure I will be able to do the Estate taxes or the final Income Tax when the time comes for that. so, I may need to hire a Tax Accountant for that part, although I have done my own taxes for over 40 years using paper and pencil, then Turbo Tax when that was invented. In sum, this is a great book.
• My dad.s estate attorney quite honestly was nice, but not very helpful. I'm almost finished with my dads estate-it has been over a year since he passed. Due to family circumstances I was required to change from an agreed to supervised estate to unsupervised estate. If it wasn't for this book, I would not have known what needed to go to probate and what could be excluded. I made the personal inventory list as requested by the attorney-her fee is based on size of the estate. After I read the book, I realized that a good chunk of funds should not be included on the list based on how my dad set up a few accounts. I mentioned it to the attorney and we took it off the list going to be filed in court. I was a little annoyed about that and made sure I read ALL of the chapters that applied to us. Also explains tax forms that need to be filed for estate and deceased family member. I'm very lucky I knew where most of my dads paperwork was for items and passwords after he died. Even though I hope to live a long time, I'm going to get the NOLO book on organizing your affairs for my executor.
• Being an executor is EXTREMELY difficult and complex. We could not have managed the trust/will requirements without this EXCELLENT, well-written, thorough resource. Even when using an attorney to navigate the maze, this book provides detailed, easy-to-follow explanations for what to expect, and how to be better organized. We have purchased several revised editions as the years have passed - we absolutely would NOT be without this resource. We recommend Nolo Press books on any topic to our friends.
