Winner of the Newbery Medal
For generations the tribes of Huns and Magyars had moved relentlessly westward, obeying the voices of their pagan gods, which compelled them to follow the elusive white stag to their promised homeland. They swept Europe, all the while pursuing their vision of the stag. Their leader was called Attila, and the land Hungary. Here is the epic story of their tribal migration and their fierce leader - known to us even today.Â
"The wonder of a fairy tale, the stirring romance of a heroic legend, rounded out with the color, atmosphere, and poetry of this artist's retelling of the story of Attila." (The New York Times)

The White Stag Audible Audio Edition Kate Seredy Jessica Almasy Listening Library Books Reviews
- This book came in very good condition. I read it as a child and decided I wanted to read it again to see if I would recommend it to my grandchildren to read. I will recommend it but I think it is more appropriate for 10-12 year olds rather than the current 7 and 5.
- I enjoyed this book. It's written for a child's reading level, but I have never read it before and I was interested in expanding my library.
This a legend of the ancestry of the Hungarians. Starting with Nimrod all the way to Attila the Hun. The moral of the story gets mixed up, but I really didn't see this as your typical "good vs. evil" or Aesop's Fable story-line. It's folklore and an explanation on how "our Hungarian ancestors" came to be.
I'm not going to explain this in great detail as other reviewers did. It's a short story and it has many illustrations and it is worth picking up or checking out at your library. - I ordered this book for my child's book report. I was worried that it would take too long to get to my house and that there would not be enough time to read the book and write the report. I couldn't believe how quickly the book arrived--just a couple of days. I was very impressed with the speed of delivery and the book was in excellent shape. Although it was a used book the book seller described it perfectly and it did not look like it had ever been touched. It looked perfectly new. If this book seller (JJ's Book Nook) can continue to operate like this I would give them a 100% satisfaction score. The book itself was a historical novel. It was less than 100 pages, but a lot of information was placed in this book. It can be read on several levels from child to adult. On the adult level, the author tells about some very specific historical events and puts them in a proper context that was very interesting. A child would not know about any of these events and some knowledge of history is necessary to fully understand the merits of the book. It basically told about the founding of the country of Hungry and some of the myths associated with a few historical facts. The combination made for a good read for both child and adult. Reading about the myths would be fun reading for children and the historical context of the story was interesting reading for adults.
- Great books by a great author! Our 10-11 year old daughter loves these and asks for more!
- As promised, this is a wonderfully magical story of adventure, growth, and faith. The imagery in the storytelling caught me up, as if I were sitting around the table listening to my father tell stories of his childhood. I never doubted, in either case, that every word was true.
- I bought this book because my Mother read it to me when I was very young, the first of many books by this author. It brought back wonderful memories of a wonderful time spent with my Mom at my bedtime. She enjoyed the book too.
- Nothing more to say
- Fabulous fable about the Magyar and Hungarian people. Loved it. Made me want to read more by Kate Seredy.
