- This isn't the worst book I have ever read, but I would have returned it if the return window on kindle products isn't so small.
I don't know what this book is about. If I was asked to describe it it would be "a year in the life of some guy named Ian, but also about his childhood and parents, and sometimes about his hip magician friends and occasionally about the history of magic, but mostly about some guy named Ian." I started the book curious about what "the52" is, and now that I have finished it I still have no idea what it is other than 52 people with sometimes vague connections to the magic world who have a card tattooed on their finger. Could have learned the same from a photo caption.
The history of magic part, while being the smallest piece of the content pie graph was by far the most interesting. Also I had never heard of any of these magicians and discovering a couple on youtube was cool; Shin Lim in particular was pretty mind-blowing.
I really hated how the author was unable to tell any stories without refocusing the story on himself. Like when he was describing one magician, "She also performed a two-card transposition; a trick that I can also do." Who cares man , you are describing someone else. My favorite was when he is describing browsing comments from his friends' instagrams and that people had begun noticing him in the background. He says, "...people would be asking who I was; some kids even said they thought I was cool." LOL what?
And then I audibly gasped when in the final chapter he described a video his friend released that had he described as having music that was, "A cover of Johnny Cash's 'Hurt'...." Seriously? No one edited this? Johnny Cash covered the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt," arguably their most famous song after "Closer." How did THAT make it past the screeners?
I was interested in the book because I thought it would be a journey into this new world of magic that I was unfamiliar with but sounded really cool. It ended up basically being part autobiography, part "wacky adventures with Ian & friends," and occasional magic history lesson. Not at ALL what I expected. - I love magic books and books about magic, so when this one popped up on my recommendations it was an easy decision. It's a memoir of a journalist reporting on magic who becomes obsessed with the art, eventually becoming a magician himself and publishing his own trick.
I liked the introduction to the 'new breed' of magic. I started following magic 20 years ago and still favor reading the classics, but this really made me interested in learning more about some of the new creators out there. The stories about different tricks he witnessed, and even the how-to's, were all really well done. Also, the author did a great job of weaving his personal life story into this work, and all of the personal pieces were some of the best writing.
However, I didn't like a few things about this. The most jarring example is that the dialogue came across as very unnatural at times. Can't put my finger on exactly why, but it was enough to distract from the story. It sounded like someone trying to recall a conversation and just not quite nailing it. I also didn't like the way the book was marketed or the subtitle. Secret society feels like a stretch. the52 was a central part of the book, but I felt like it should have been a side note compared to everything else going on.
Last, I can't imagine that someone who doesn't already really like magic would like this. It's not a great start for the general public. Good book if you already love magic, probably not the best one to start with if you don't. One book that I think bridged that gap well and still told an interesting story was Alex Stone's Fooling Houdini if you are looking for a book to start with.
Impressive story, author did a great job. Recommended if you like magic already. - This book is fantastic, wether you are a fan of magic or not. Ian paints a vivid picture of this world he got rolled into and takes you with him every step of the way on this "adventure". Getting to know more about some of my favorite people in the Magic industry is just an added benefit. His writing is phenomenal- I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud reading. You feel all the things he wants you to feel- sadness, excitement, humor, accomplishment, ambition... It runs the gammit of the emotional spectrum in the best possible way. I HIGHLY recommend!
- This book is more about the author's exploits with his wacky friends. I found it totally boring.
- My dad was a magician and magic enthusiast, so I've grown up on the periphery of that hobby/business (albeit not the hip new scene described in this book). I guess it's a generational thing, but I found this memoir of the author's initiation into "the52", an ostensible secret society of magic's new wave stars, to be kind of a slog. It's not that the current generation of magicians have invented curated personas - magicians have always done that sort of thing, by the nature of their work - but, like the Instagram campaigns and publicity stunts described herein, the results are mostly slick and superficial.
- I really wanted to like this book but the more I got into it the more I was put off. It was a look way to go for a magic trick!
- I've been waiting for this book for a few months now. When it finally showed up I immediately spent a few hours in it. After reading the prologue, I was immediately hooked. I expected in the beginning to immediately get hooked into the magic, but with the information on Ian's background, I felt even more connected and eager to continue reading. Highly recommended.
- This book details a writer's journey through the mystery and unknown of the underground magic scene. From touching the hearts of the reader through stories of his childhood, to detailing his beginnings as a magician, this book has inspired me to further my knowledge of magic as an art. This book is perfect for magicians and non-magicians. No knowledge in the field of magic is required to understand the contents of this book. In fact, it is perfect for those interested in beginning his or her journey into the world of magic. 10/10 recommend this read.

- I ordered this book for my daughter and she couldn’t put it down but at page 573, it jumped to 620. I’ve missed the return window. Just make sure to check the pages as soon as you receive the book.
- Great price, but it is all 7 books combined into one volume and one table of contents; which makes navigating to different books and chapters a bit more difficult than if they were 7 distinct books.
- IMPORTANT For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases. This difference isn't as prominent or noticeable as it was with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, but still something to keep in mind. Also, to answer a question that has come up quite a bit, this is the FULL BOOK and not an abridged or shortened version.
The overall quality is fantastic. The colors are vibrant and the images are, in my opinion, even better than those in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1).
The best features
1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy orange hardback with green lettering on the spine.
2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.
3. All chapter intros are illustrated.
4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.
5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains". In Chamber of Secrets (compared to Sorcerer's Stone), some pages even have beautiful patterns over the entire page. One page has a spider-web pattern and is right next to a picture of Aragog. Quite brilliant overall.
I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. Based on the fact that the illustrations for this book were even better than in the first book, I'm now looking forward to the rest of the series even more. Prisoner of Azkaban is next and I'm heartbroken it'll be so long before I get to have it in my collection. - I didn't read Potter as a child, unfortunately Christians were making a fuss over it and it was banned. Now as an adult with an 11 year old daughter I delved in and having read the firs chapter of the first book , I declared I didn't get the fuss...
I am now in my second read through of the books. I finished them in three weeks. We've watched the first three movies and I await my daughter finishing each box anxiously so we can watch the next!
The books are so well written they transport you, nothing less. It's a great escape at the end of the day.
As for all the Christian hullabaloo there's no real magic in the book. It's on par with bewitched or cartoons. I suppose if you're the type to ban Disney then these aren't for you, but for the rest of the population they're really harmless and silly.
The later books are a bit darker but the first several are really kind of cartoon magic.
This second book is better than the first as we are already introduced to all the characters. Character development and friendships deepen in the second book and you begin to become attached to the little magicians and start to realize why this series created such a rabid fandom.
The books are adventurous and imaginative and have so much heart. The stories are packed with substance- very little to no filler in these books. They're a kids series, but it's the first time in a long time I have read a book and didn't feel like skimming a good bit. There's nothing you want to miss in these!
It's great for a parent to read with their child, bc anytime you can bond over something especially as they get older it's a wonderful thing.
And for those adults who didn't read as a kid, go ahead, you won't be bored. Yes they're kids books but they're written on a level everyone can enjoy. That's the real magic! - The Chamber of Secrets is in my opinion the weakest of the Harry Potter books. Still, it is a great read compared to 90% of other books in general, and 99% of other children's fantasy novels. The art in these books are simply amazing. They add to the story subtly, rather than take the story over as the movies did. To me, this is vital, as part of the joy of the Harry Potter world is the evocation of your imagination. I am happy to give my kids a little push with art, as they clearly still create their own images of quidditch, Hagrid, and the often explosive and unexpected effects of Ron's broken wand.
- The book started out good but discovered as I was reading it that it's missing almost 50 pages in the middle of the book. Disappointing and frusterating
- These Illustrated edition’s are my first time ever reading the Harry Potter series, and I am so happy to be reading the series through these editions. The illustrations add so much magic, liveliness, intrigue, and fun to the story of Harry Potter. I absolutely love these editions and I can’t wait to turn each page to see the story progress as well as see the beautiful illustrations. I can’t recommend these books enough especially if you have never read Harry Potter, this is the perfect way to start and truly be immersed in the world of Hogwarts and the magic that each page brings. J. K Rowling’s writing is so much fun to read and it truly keeps you captivated in the plot, settings and characters. The writing is also the kind that keeps you from not wanting to stop as the book is so well written and portrayed through words. This is quickly becoming one of my top two series I have ever read. 100% recommend getting the illustrated edition as you will fall in live from the first page.

- A classic, filled with wisdom and insights into the shifts in legal reasoning following the New Deal cases. The book itself is short and extremely dry - a slog to get through. Having said that, the book is a valuable read and a classic in the field.
- I attempted to read this before paralegal, and after paralegal school while working in a legal capacity, and honestly, this is quite painful to read. When I first read it I didn't enjoy it. I thought it was because I was uneducated. This whole thing reads like dicta, but unapologetically douchey. Legal Reasoning from the Delaney Series is much better.
- A small book concerning Edward Levi's theory on legal reasoning. The size is perfectly compact, but don't let that fool you. Levi's reasoning takes serious concentration to follow. By no means an "introduction" to the law, you should have a fairly good grasp on the workings of the court system before trying to finish this. The excellent new foreword to this edition by Schauer helps give needed context. Recommended for anyone heading to law school or interested in legal theory.
- Excellent primer for understanding common-law judging. Unfortunately also an apologetic tract for tyrannical kritarchy. Worth reading.
- It is a short book, but worth the price, and comprehensively packed with details about logical and legal reasoning. I can't imagine what you could do with it other than prepare for law school and/or law school exams/writing, but for that purposes, it reliably serves you well.
If you're heading to law school next Fall, pick it up (but be prepared to feel a bit overwhelmed/exciting about how much there is to learn), and when you're IN law school, pick it up (and be prepared to understand a heck of a lot more than when you read it the first time)! - This book was not all bad. I enjoyed the info behind the law and how they were created. Other than that it was just OK.
- Some of the material was slightly dated, and it was written with a legal style which can be difficult for the legal novice. Sort of a Catch-22. If you can read and clearly understand, you do not need what you just read.

Introduction
Edward H. Levi explains in the preface that the purpose of his thesis is to provide an analysis developed at the trial level based on statutory and constitutional law. The trials and their analysis are ones, for the most part, which have reached the appellate level. He notes that Judge Frank appreciates the discretionary organization of fact at the trial level whereas Dean O'Meara appreciates benefits of the natural law approach. O'meara contends that for those trials that to do reach the appellate level, "a well established principle, expressive of the earlier decisions, is clearly dispositive of the controversy." Levi dedicates his thesis to providing examples which help provide an explanation to the process of legal reasoning. He focuses more on the process rather than one method over another
Development
Levi begins to explain the process of legal reasoning as it relates to case law and initially that it is a three step process; similarity is seen between cases, law inherent in the first case is announced, and then the rule of law is made applicable to the second case. This method works well for case law but that for other areas it may present many imperfections. It is the similarities or differences in each case that is determined by the judge. There will be cases where there is no precedent and therefore in these cases the legal process cannot simply be the "application of known rules to diverse facts."
Reasoning by example in the law, as Levi writes, is key in part to that which the law process holds over the litigants. As the law is ever changing to meet the new challenges presented by a growing and highly technological society, reasoning by example or precedent illustrates the important role where the common ideas of a society can have in shaping the law. "What a court says is dictum, but what a legislature says is statute. Interpretation of intention when dealing with a statute the is way of describing the attempt to compare cases on the basis of the standard thought to be common at the time the legislation was passed." The courts interpret legislation through the appellate process and it is here, through this process, that the courts impact the ever changing law.
In section two of Levi's thesis he gives examples of how judges interpreted the law based on precedent and also how each opinion led to changes in the next. The cases he sites begin with MacPherson v. Buick; the potential liability of a seller of an article which cause injury to a person who did not buy the article from the seller. Due to limited space I am going to attempt to be very brief describing these. This case was in 1816 and takes us to 1851; Langridge v. Levy. The plaintiff contended that the defendant had sold a defective gun for the use of himself and his sons. In this case the gun went off causing a lamp to explode which caused the actual injuries to the son. Five years later in Winterbottom v. Wright the court refused to permit a coachman to recover against the defendant who had provided a defective coach under contract with the Postmaster General. The coach had broken down and the plaintiff causing him to become lame. "He could not recover because to extend liability this far would lead to absurd and outrageous consequences. This is where I believe the author is getting close to "Proximate Cause and just how far liability should extend at the time of this writing in 1949."
"It must be realized that the words of a statute are not dictum but rather legislative intent. The legislature may have had a particular case uppermost in mind, but it has spoken in general terms." In this sense the statutory interpretation tells how to operate and through the courts application of the appellate process the statute changes with the views of a society with the constraints of the Constitution.
" On June 25th, 1910, the Mann Act provides in part Any person who shall knowingly transport to or cause to be transported, or aid or assist in obtaining transportation for, or in transporting, in interstate or foreign commerce or in any territory or in the District of Columbia, any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose, or with the intent and purpose to induce, entice, or compel such woman or girl to become a prostitute, or to give herself up to debauchery, or to engage in any other immoral practice... shall be deemed guilty of a felony. During the time of the Mann Act large American cities had illegal and segregated red light districts. Some representatives thought the bill to be too vague in almost every respect. There was much debate surrounding this bill. On one side there were those in favor of home rules, or powers of the state. On the other side there were those that argued that "public health and public morals appeal to us. The proposed legislation is constitutional, and it is related to moral considerations of the most compelling force."
Levi dedicates an impressive amount of his thesis in order to follow the changes to The Mann Act over time. It is not within the scope of this review to attempt to paraphrase this work to the reader in this review, as interesting as it is. It is my belief that Levi follows the changes and history of The Mann Act in order to reinforce the belief that laws and statutes are ever changing in order to meet the needs of a changing society. Had this thesis been written in 2009, as opposed to 1949, I believe we would still enjoy this fundamental belief but with the added excitement and challenges which technology brings to the table.
Conclusion
Levi has used examples of case law, statutory law, and constitutional interpretation to illustrate his point that the law is ever changing as technology and a society changes within the constraints of its constitution. Things that may have at one time been considered to be extremely dangerous items for sale may have become commonplace due to improved technologies and experience.
I believe Levi's main point in this thesis is to illustrate the "process" of legal reasoning through the examples he has provided. Changes in technology, society, and communication all play their respective parts in the process of legal reasoning as Levi has presented them.
